By September 2005, Indonesia’s new President will have nearly completed one year in office, while John Howard will be well into his fourth term as Prime Minister. The Update will provide an opportunity to review the state of the often contentious bilateral relationship in the context of wider regional concerns and cooperation. Too often has the bilateral relationship been discussed as if it existed in a vacuum, instead of affecting, and being affected by, developments and perceptions in Southeast Asia as a whole, and elsewhere. The tsunami disaster has added a new element and perhaps provided an opportunity to provide a more positive cast to the relationship despite the tragic circumstances.

Apart from the usual political and economic updates, sessions will include an overview of the present relationship and future prospects, discussion of security relationships, people-to-people links, and trade and business relations, as well as a session on mutual perceptions. Speakers are likely to include at least six distinguished figures from Indonesia, and a number of relevant experts from Australia and elsewhere.

The conference is free of charge.
