Women in Indonesia: gender, equity and development
Indonesia Assessment 2001
Editors: Kathryn Robinson, Sharon Bessell
Indonesia now has its first woman President -- Megawati Sukarnoputri. The debates surrounding her elevation to the presidency brought issues of gender and politics to the forefront of the public agenda, raising crucial questions about the role that women are to play in public life in post-Soeharo Indonesia. The struggle to achieve a democratic transition following the fall of Soeharto's New Order in 1998 has also focused attention on issues of equity and gender justice. This book explores gender relations in Indonesia and presents an overview of the political, social, cultural and economic situation of women. The volume is Indonesia Assessment 2001, a result of the annual Indonesia Update conference organized by the Indoneisa Project and the Department of Political and Social Change at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, ANU.
Indonesia today: challenges of history
Indonesia Assessment 2000
Editors: Grayson J Lloyd, Shannon L Smith
It is often said that history can function as a guide to the future. At the turn of the century and the crossroads of reformasi, it is timely to examine aspects of Indonesia's political, economic and social history -- the lessons, challenges and achievements -- both to inform current events, as well as to indicate where Indonesia is heading. This volume makes an important contribution to considerations of the Indonesia of the new millennium, and the addressing of problems free from the exigencies of the present and prejudices of the past. Indonesia Today provides the latest, up-to-date overview of economic and political developments in Indonesia under President Abdurrahman Wahid. It also explores events, processes and themes in (mainly 20th century) Indonesia -- including the evolution of political institutions and democracy, economic development and political economy, religious and social movements, political ideology and the role of the armed forces -- putting the mirror to historical events in order to shed light on the issues of Indonesia today.
Indonesia in transition: social aspects of reformasi and crisis
Indonesia Assessment 1999
Editors: Chris Manning, Peter van der Veer
Indonesia enters the new millennium at a time of transition. It has experienced several crises - in particular the economic crisis of 1997-98, a severe intensification of its environmental degradation, and more recently te East Timor crisis, the ongoing Aceh demand for independence, the change of government from the autocratic Soeharto regime to one democratically elected and under the leadership of President Abdurrahman Wahid, and the outbreak of a number of violent communal conflicts. These crises were separate but have interlinked social and political dynamics. This major volume is the first wide-ranging analysis of recent developments. It analyses the social and political dimensions of reformation: poverty and income, environment and livelihood, civil society and legal institutions, and Islam and politics. Contributors include Indonesian and Australian scholars from a range of social science disciplines.
Post-Suharto Indonesia: renewal or chaos?
Indonesia Assessment 1998
Editor: Geoff Forrester
Indonesia's economy has been ravaged by the Asian economic crisis. Its leader for 32 years, President Soeharto, was forced from office in May 1998 amidst rioting and student demonstrations. What are Indonesia's prospects over the next ten years?
This book examines the political and economic trends which are shaping Indonesia's future.
Indonesia’s technological challenge
Indonesia Assessment 1997
Editors: Hal Hill, Thee Kian Wie.
This volume provides a lively review of recent economic and political developments in Indonesia and addresses the issue of the country's "Technological Challenge" from a variety of perspectives. These include the policy foundations, the analytical issues, case studies, international co-operation and transfers, as well as particular challenges at the sectoral level and among both large and small enterprises. This is the first volume in English to examine these important questions facing the world's fourth largest country.
Population and human resources
Indonesia Assessment 1996
Editors: Gavin W Jones, Terence H Hull. Published by ISEAS in 2000.
Indonesia's population, the fourth largest in the world, is expected to pass the 200 million mark in 1997. It has sustained high rates of economic growth over the past two decades. This has undoubtedly been related to its success in moderating earlier high rates of population growth, and to its significant accomplishments in human resource development. This volume is therefore timely. It presents a comprehensive evaluation of the current situation and assesses future prospects.
Development in eastern Indonesia
Indonesia Assessment 1995
Editors: Joan Hardjono, Colin Barlow
Indonesia Assessment 1995 contains two main sections: one overviewing current Indonesian economic and political conditions, and one examining economic and social developments in Eastern Indonesia. This is the vast region of 25 million people, lying between Java, Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia. The book provides not only an up-do-date overview of Indonesia in 1995, but also one of the first comprehensive surveys of Eastern Indonesia, a rapidly growing but little known region of Southeast Asia. It will serve as an invaluable reference for policy makers, officials, scholars, business people and others interested in Indonesian development.
Finance as a key sector in Indonesia’s development
Indonesia Assessment 1994
Editor: Ross H McLeod
This volume is based on "Indonesia Update 1994", the latest in the series of annual conferences on Indonesia held at the Australian National University. It presents overviews of economic and political developments, together with a collection of papers on the role of the finance sector. Indonesia Assesment 1994 contains the Keynote Address to the conference by Professor Dr Ali Wardhana, Special Adviser to the President, former Minister of Finance, and former Coordinating Minister for Economics, Finance and Industry. Three present or former directors of the central bank joint Professor Wardhana to contribute wide-ranging discussions of the process of financial policy reform as seen from the inside. They are joined by a range of other contributors drawn mainly from academic circle in Indonesia, Australia and elsewhere, and some from the private sector. Indonesia Assesment 1994 provides the most complete available coverage of the current state of the financial sector in Indonesia and the policies which affect it. This volume will be an invaluable reference for policy-makers, academics, and all those interested in the finance sector and in economic and political developments in Indonesia. The editor is a Fellow at the ANU's Indonesia Project, with many years of research and consulting experience in the Indonesian financial system.
