27 February. Salafi on the periphery: the growth of Salafi movement and its influence on the lives of young women in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara

Salafi is recognised as one of the most conservative Muslim groups, adhering to the strictest interpretations of Islam, which often differs from the typical practices observed in Indonesia. Because of its conspicuous presence within the Indonesian religious public expression, the movement has become a subject of scholarly inquiry. Many studies on Salafism in Indonesia have tried to understand the movement by focusing on its young followers in urban settings, but there is less emphasis on how the group is articulated by young women living within relatively underdeveloped and peripheral areas. This research specifically focuses on the experience of young women within the Salafi community in Bima. Based on four months of ethnographic fieldwork, this study found that for these young women, Salafism provides a sense of certainty, distancing them from doubt and ambiguity in life.

19 February. Indonesia and BRICS - A conversation with Lili Yan Ing and Krisna Gupta

On January 7 this year, Indonesia formally joined the BRICS, a bloc formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2009 with the addition of South Africa in 2010. Indonesia is the fifth new member, following Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates who joined in 2024. In this webinar we talk with Dr Lili Yan Ing and Dr Krisna Gupta on the economics of Indonesia joining this new bloc: what are the benefits for Indonesia, how it situates us in the context of US-China relations, and how it will affect our trade and investment flows.
